Objectives
The objective of this project is to develop a system that will use an autonomous robot for an automated inspection of nozzle welds. The robot will carry a novel matrix phased array probe which, combined with the 3D beam steering capability, will enable the entire volume of the weld to be inspected in a single operation. The three main objectives of the NozzleInspect project are:
- Development of a novel and new flexible phased array probe that will improve the sizing and sensitivity of the inspection. The flexible phased array probe will compensate for surface profile variation of the complex components used in nuclear power plants and also in other safety critical facilities (oil & gas, chemical, steel manufacturing).
- Development of an advanced profile following system, with improved reliability and sufficient accuracy, to determine the position of the robot on the nozzle components.
- Development of a low cost robot that carries an ultrasonic inspection system and an advanced profile following system. The robot will make use of vacuum-suction systems for powered motion.
